I'm using InDesign v20.4 on a MacBook Pro with Apple M1 Pro. in5 version 3.8.24

I'm working on an 82-page magazine that has slideshows, animations and videos. When I export as fixed-layout epub, everything works fine. When I 'publish online' (to Adobe's server) everything works fine.

The client wants the ability to upload the publication on their own servers, so I purchased a gold licence of in5, after testing it out on the trial version (which worked fine).

Now, with the licensed version, the videos don't work. Everything seems to export properly, but when you open it in (safari and chrome) a browser, the videos don't play. Chrome says file not found, Safari opens a folder with a file called Media selected.

I thought maybe the size of the document and all the rich media was causing a conflict or something, so I made a single page InDesign file,  placed a video (.mp4) and tried again. Same thing.

Can someone help? I'm really at my wits end - and support doesn't seem to be giving any support at all.

Here is a link to the test files: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10z38GIvxQacLIrPuTETuCL0Ld7l5m4nf/view?usp=share_link

Many thanks

The issue you're encountering with videos not playing after exporting with in5 on macOS is something we’ve seen recently due to changes in Adobe’s 20.4.0.52 InDesign update.

The latest version of InDesign (20.4) on macOS has introduced issues that are causing unexpected behavior, as documented in Adobe community discussions, and this is specifically affecting image optimization and media assets during in5 exports. These issues stem from the InDesign update itself and have been reported by users across the Adobe community. As of just an hour ago, Adobe has acknowledged the issue in their InDesign 20.4.1 prerelease and confirmed that they are actively working on a fix.

In the meantime, reverting to InDesign 20.3.1 on macOS is an interim solution, and we've also confirmed that exporting on a Windows machine with InDesign 20.4 does not produce the same issues.

General Guidelines for your Video

  • Please make sure you videos are properly linked (you can check this via the Links panel). If InDesign can’t locate the video, it will substitute a static preview image, which won’t function in your export.
  • Packaging all of your content so that it is available locally so that your InDesign file, your linked assets, and your destination folder are all on your local hard drive one of our most effective best practices for eliminating network connectivity and permission-related errors.
  • Edit your video content using your favorite video editor outside of InDesign, here is an article: Can in5 export my cropped or scaled video?
  • If you want to autplay your video, then you may go to in5>Interactive Widgets>Video and select Autoplay  and Mute (mute allows autoplay in the browser), here is an article:  Autoplaying Audio & Video with InDesign & in5
